STORY

My name is Oksana. When I was a kid I spent a lot of time with my nana Maria. She taught me her craft and shared her wisdom with me. One day nana showed me how to make a doll using no needle or scissors, which she called a motanka.
”It’s a special doll. It has a unique power as a protector of a family. It protects, gives strength and ensures prosperity. There were times when every girl knew how to make this token.” said nana.
The years flew by. My life wasn’t any different from that of others. I went to school, then college, got married and had kids. One time my daughter came home with an interesting homework – to finish the doll they started in class. When I took the doll in my hands it instantly reminded me of my childhood. I remembered my nana and what she said about motankas or family tokens. I made the doll carefully selecting fabrics and threads, thinking about their power and symbolism that my nana taught me.
I have been making these dolls ever since, and I have been really grateful to share my nana’s craft with people all over the world. @ecomotanka is my shop that gives me the ability to be a craftswoman like my nana, and share my soul and heart through my motankas.
