What does “ai-tsugi”mean?
In Japan, “kintsugi” 金継ぎ is a famous method of restoring broken pottery that has been passed down for generations. Instead of throwing the pottery away, cracks and chips are filled in with lacquer and skilfully decorated with the power of gold or other metals. This process goes far beyond simple repair. It gives the broken piece a new life, making it even stronger, more beautiful and valuable, reflecting its unique history.
“Aitsugi” builds on this notion. “Ai “ means love in Japanese and “Tsugi” means connect, so “ai-tsugi” suggests connecting with love.
It’s all about love, care and connectedness. When our hearts and bodies are traumatized, just knowing we are not alone, that others are standing up for us, can help us to get through the most difficult times and give us the strength to carry on. Like the lacquer and gold that restore the cracks in pottery, our love can help to heal the wounds and shattered spirits of those traumatized by the Russian invasion.
